Every Piece is an adventure! For my 200th upload to the Manga and Anime category, I thought I'd do something special!

I had always wanted to do one of these step by step collage, things. It was quite a pain in the ass, having to stop, scan, then resume. But, the evolution is pretty neat! Here we have Princess Jacqueline in the possessive claws of the Lord Regent!

In the first panel, we have the incomplete line art. I have an extremely bad habit of not completing my outlines before jumping into coloring. There is still pencil, the hair has no lines and there is overall limited definition. Using a .1 pen.

Second, is the shadows in the skin and tried to go pretty dark with it, French Grey 90,% 70% then 50% That penciled in, free floating circle at the top is my 'light source', so I can map out my shadows evenly.

Third, The highlights of the skin. I like using french greys as bases, because they absorbe whatever you overlay them with. So here, we have Light Walnut, Light Peach, and French grey 10%. The darkness lightened up dramatically. I then got bored of coloring and penned in the hairlines.

Fourth, Added the shadows to Princess Jacqueline's hair using Light Umber, Bronze and Goldenrod. I keep referencing my lightsource, to know what is the top of the hair, what is the bottom, and it helps me keep from coloring the very tips of her curls. I want to keep those pretty clean, so i can give them bright highlights. BUT, I want to make sure I darken the space behind them, so said highlights will pop.

Fifth, Bam, Highlight time! Using Spanish orange, Canary yellow and Yellow Orchard. Pretty straight forward.

Sixth, I had NO idea what do for Eustace's hair. Zero. So I did it grey. Hated it. added some Warm Grey, hated it more. Re-read the section I described him, "salt and peppered hair". So added in a few straggly brown strands and hated it less. Better leave it alone before I scrap the whole piece. Added the shadows to their clothing. You can always make darks, darker, but not lights, lighter. So I personally always work from the shadows, outwards, and ration where I will put my highlights. Jacqueline is normally in green, and the bad guys tend to favor blues. When I dont have a dark enough green or something, I go over the spot with a 70% cool grey, then the color, then go over it again with the 70%

Seventh, Added the highlights to their clothes. Her light greens were tricky, negotiating between Grass and Apple, and then I added lime green, light Olive, True Green, and Chartreuse for her lace. I gave her the white frill, just to break up the green madness. For Eustace, I made his suit grey/white, systematically going from dark to light cool gryes, 90%, 80%, 70%, 50%, 30%. Did his gloves with a 50%/30% trade off, I wanted to keep them generally white. He is a gentleman after all.

Eigth, NOW THE ART HAPPENS! Breaking out the white paint to make the highlights really pop and to counter all the dark colors. One side of Jacquelines hair obviously gets more white, because it's closer to the light source. Lips, Eyes, the broken pearl necklace, everything that can reflect, does. Also, added her signature freckles. Also X2, Added more hair on the bottom, since I didn't know how well her dress would look. Answer? COVER THAT SHIT WITH HAIR! I extended Eustace's arm to its natural position. Outlined the edges of the pair to clean it up a bit.

Nine, Well, we're nearly done! But, to quote :iconrode-egel: "white backgrounds are so harsh on all your hard work!" So, we need to add some atmosphere and give the piece an overall sense of completion. Just going with an easy night sky, since I know I have the colors, and I really, love the look it gives. Going from Black, Warm grey 90%, Navy to Indigo, lays the perfect gradient. The 'Lightsource' conveniently becomes the kinked up crescent moon. But, right now it looks ugly as fuck.

Ten! The Completed picture! Blended the sky with more Navy, Indigo, True blue, and capped it again with a navy, to 90% warm grey. Then, for the starry evening sky, I dipped my white paint on a wet toothbrush, then ran my thumb over the bristles. The chaotic, random dotting is really attractive, rather than trying to mimic the universe. Gave the moon a red tint, because diabolical shit is going down!

And there you have it, coloring from start to finish! Hope this provided any insight into my process, or possibly gave some inspiration to yours! GO FORTH AND ART!

Haven't read the captivating, thrilling, sultry, Damsel In Distress story?! READ IT! Solo, completed picture!

The Princess and The Pirate prt 1.I

Roqueburne was a kingdom on the west coast. A forest behind it, an ocean in front, really, it was a self sufficient place that rarely required any real attention from the empire it was apart of. Now. But, it wasn't always so.

Bustling enterprise doesn't just happen. The King and Queen of Roquburne were implanted here by the empire ages ago. Only by years of blood, steel and iron, did their kingdom become a great shining gem by the sea. The people became educated and were prosperous. Crippling plagues were forced from the city, winter after winter, fewer died. Each spring, a budding culture renaissance came closer, and closer. A proud, ci
